The Government established a comprehensive SDGs Governance and Coordination Framework, aligning the
coordination clusters with both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Zimbabwe’s United
Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (ZUNSDCF) for 2022-2026.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global objectives adopted by the United Nations in 2015, aiming to achieve peace, prosperity, through partnerships for the people and the planet for all by 2030. Unlike the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which were limited to developing countries and had a narrower scope, the SDGs apply universally to all countries and emphasize a holistic approach to global challenges. SDGs are premised on 3 dimensions, Economic, Social and Environment.
The Benefits of Sustainable Development
- Environmental Protection- SD helps conserve natural resources, reduce pollution, and protect ecosystems,
ensuring that natural environments are preserved for future generations. - Economic Growth- By fostering efficient use of resources and encouraging green technologies, SD promotes long-term economic stability and growth while reducing the risks associated with environmental degradation.
- Social Equity- SD supports fair distribution of resources and opportunities, helping to reduce poverty and
inequality, and ensuring that all people have access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and clean water. - Health Improvement- Sustainable practices, such as reducing pollution and promoting clean energy, contribute to better public health outcomes by minimizing exposure to harmful substances and improving living conditions.
- Resilience to Climate Change- By integrating climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, sustainable development enhances communities’ resilience to climate-related impacts such as extreme weather events
and rising sea levels. - Enhanced Quality of Life: SD supports the development of sustainable communities with improved infrastructure, better urban planning, and access to green spaces, leading to a higher quality of life for individuals.
- Intergenerational Equity: SD ensures that future generations inherit a world that is capable of supporting
their needs, preserving resources, and maintaining a stable climate.
